There are a lot of different causes that can contribute to low libido So a lot of times people say to me, “Well, I don't think I am emotional about intimacy. Or yeah, I eat a little bit emotionally. But there’s this other stuff. You know, I have this thyroid issue or I've got insulin resistance or there's other things going on.” I would say that most of us have a combination of things going on with your libido.
But and, lots of these things play together and exacerbate one another, and really the way to get where you need to go with all of them is by starting from the place Where I start with all my clients. Which is, “Okay, wait a minute, let's stop beating ourselves up.” T here’s so many layers of guilt and shame and frustration with ourselves that happens when we’re stuck in these battles. And they get you no where.
The first step, no matter what's going on, is this compassionate respect for the fact that there's a reason this is happening. “I’m not lazy. It's not that I’m short on willpower. I’m not an idiot.” All these things that we say to ourselves, really smart people say to themselves, that keep you stuck.
None of those things are true. The truth is there’s a reason. Whatever’s going on, is going on. “There is a reason that I am binging on sugar every afternoon. Or there is a reason that I've put on 25 pounds. And I owe it to myself to pay close attention and start to ask the questions that I need to ask to figure out what's going on and what I need so that I can do it differently.”
Well, exactly what you just said. And, first of all, I tend to work with high performers. And the percentage of people who start to work with me who start by explaining to me how lazy they are and how undisciplined they are. And if anybody is listening to this, feeling this way about themselves, take a minute, take a breath, take a step back, forget about the food for a minute, take a look at the rest of your life, and show me where the evidence is that you don't get things done. Or you don't have discipline. Or you don't do a lot. Or you’re not a hard worker. And oftentimes, women can be really good at working hard and taking on a lot and really good at willpower. The problem is, I don't care how good you are at it, there’s always a limit. And everybody’s going to run out of willpower. You’re going to run out of willpower. If you have a plan that depends on it, you’re likely to run out of willpower at the time that you need it the most. And if part of what’s going on is that you’re in the cycle of being busy, being stressed, being overwhelmed, having too much to do, you probably already tapped out the willpower that you have.
